Resist painting

(Goblin is 26 months)

Happy Whimsical Hearts is my new favourite blog. It has so many brilliant ideas but its also beautiful to look at. I don't know how it manages it but I get a real sense of contentment just looking through the posts on HWH. Yesterday Goblin and I tried out an idea that we found there - Paint resist with acrylic paint and masking tape letters.

 It was with some trepidation that I started this project. I've always thought of acrylic paint as really hard to get off stuff (probably because in my A level years I did a mixture of oil and acrylics and confused them in my brain).

 I got Hublet on standby incase Goblin got covered in paint and then started to try and touch things. It didn't take long before Goblin ditched the paint brushes in favour of hands. Hands and full body weight!!! I'd found some cheap canvases in our little book shop and I was a bit worried when Goblin started leaning on them that they might not take the weight. He also decided to paint his feet and legs.  At one point the canvases were turning a uniform brown where he's smeared so many colours together. Often books about teaching kids art say to start with just one or two colours. This may have been a good idea. But I rescued it by putting dabs of paint straight from the tubes onto the canvas and getting Goblin to work in those areas with a brush rather than his hands.

 And we finished up by jumping on the canvases, which spread the nice bright colours around without smearing. Goblin liked the jumping. 

 When they were done I bundled Goblin up the stairs to the shower and he and I scrubbed ourselves while beautiful Hublet cleaned up our mess.

 We pulled the masking tape letters off the canvases and here are the results. I really like them.
