Spring Activities - Fun with Flowers

(Goblin is 28 months)
The weather is getting warmer and the flowers are starting to bloom. So this weekend Goblin and I played with plants.
I laid out some plants on a mat: some herbs, a bunch of flowers, some flower stems, a bowl, and a pestel and mortar. As I'd hoped Goblin used the pestel and mortar to pulverise the herbs. I got him to smell the mashed up herbs so he could see that they all had different scents. He is very funny when he tries purposefully to sniff, there is a lot of huffing and puffing involved.
I've been wanting to do Montessori scent bottles with him but I think that might still be a bit beyond his reach, so this is a nice first step. He got very into smelling things and even sniffed the flower stems - but they didn't really have a scent.
After a while Goblin asked for some paper. So I brought over some paper, glue and paint. Here is a little photographic journey through his activity.
The final art work went a bit brown with all the paint being mixed together. And it got very soggy from excessive paint (Goblin really likes squeezing the paint out of the bottles) and his enthusiastic rubbing of the paper led to it disintegrating at one end. So this was very much a process piece rather than a finished work to put on the wall. But Goblin enjoyed it and obviously though brown paint was delicious.

I'm sharing this on

  2. I love that. Must but B some small squeeze bottles for the paint. Too mean to give her free rein on the big bottles - she would use them all up, seriously.

    1. we do have some smaller bottles but I'm too lazy to keep them topped up and Goblin is too impatient to wait while I do it if he is in the mood to paint. But I buy the paints when ELC has sales on so i get them half price and stock up with every sale - I have a ton waiting to be used now

  3. What a good idea to put the pestel and mortar with the herbs and flowers, and the painting looks a lot of fun! Would be lovely if you'd like to add this to our Spring Carnival too. :)

  6. What a great idea - I love the use of flowers and herbs - I find it so difficult to get the sense of smell into play with J and T.

Thank you for linking to Tuesday Tots and we look forward to seeing you next week.
